September birthstone: not one stone, but ten
September birthstone: why sapphire is not the only stone for Virgo and Libra
Are you celebrating your birthday in September or October and looking for a piece of jewelry with your birthstone? Then you'll probably quickly come across the same lists: one stone per month, neatly in a row. Sapphire for September. Done.
But that's only half true. There isn't just one birthstone for September. That list of one stone per month is largely marketing, originating in the early twentieth century when American jewelers drew up a standard list to make gifts easier to sell. What truly exists is richer: for each zodiac sign, multiple gemstones symbolize it, each with its own character.
Two signs, not one month
September falls under two zodiac signs: Virgo (August 23 to September 22) and Libra (September 23 to October 22). Both have their own set of gemstones, linked to their ruling planet.
Virgo is influenced by Mercury, the planet of clarity and analysis. The stones associated with Virgo are pure and grounding, focused on structure and meticulousness: garnet, citrine, carnelian, emerald, and ruby.
Libra is influenced by Venus, the planet of beauty and harmony. The stones associated with Libra are soft and refined, focused on connection and balance: sapphire, aquamarine, lapis lazuli, peridot, and moonstone.
That's ten stones for one month, not one. Anyone who only knows the standard list misses most of the story.
Why I chose sapphire
Of those ten stones, sapphire is worn by both signs: it suits the meticulous, structured nature of Virgo and the harmonious energy of Libra. That makes it the stone I have chosen for the September birthstone collection. Sapphire is calm and refined, and symbolizes balance: not as peace that just happens to you, but as something you actively choose.
You can find sapphire in the collection as a ring and as stud earrings, in silver and in 24-karat gold plating.
What a birthstone does and doesn't do
A birthstone predicts nothing and changes nothing about who you are. You don't have to believe that a stone does something for you to wear it. It does remind you of something: the month you were born, a zodiac sign you might recognize yourself in, or simply a stone you find beautiful. That is the biggest misconception about birthstones: that you have to believe in the symbolism to benefit from it. It can also simply be a way to personalize a gift or a piece of jewelry for yourself.
How to choose between the ten stones
There's no wrong answer, but a few questions help:
- Are you a Virgo or a Libra? Check your birth date against the two periods above; that determines which set of five stones suits you.
- Are you looking for a stone for daily wear or for a special occasion? Sapphire and garnet are hard enough for daily wear, stones like lapis lazuli require a bit more care.
- Is it for yourself or a gift? If you're looking for a gift for someone born in September or October, the shared stone, sapphire, is a safe and meaningful choice, regardless of which of the two signs that person specifically is.
A birthstone for every month
Don't want to choose between the two signs, or don't know someone's exact birth date? The Luna birthstone rings cover all twelve months, in silver and gold, so you always get the right month without having to figure out which zodiac sign it belongs to first.
All jewelry from the birthstone collection is sent in a box, packaged as a gift and ready to give.
You don't have to choose between what you believe and what you find beautiful. Both can coexist.
